What Does Ezra 1:7 Mean?
The account turns to the holy vessels. Years before, when Babylon sacked Jerusalem, Nebuchadnezzar had carried off the temple's sacred objects and stored them in the house of his gods, as trophies of conquest. Now Cyrus orders them brought out again to be returned to their rightful home.
These vessels had stood for a season inside a pagan temple, seemingly captive to other gods. Yet what is set apart for the LORD remains His, even in exile, even in the house of idols. Their long captivity ends; they are reclaimed for worship. God forgets nothing that belongs to Him. What looked lost was only waiting, and in His time He restores what was taken. The things consecrated to God are never finally surrendered to the powers that seize them.
