Turning from argument to appeal, Paul sums up the letter's case and urges the Galatians not to surrender the freedom Christ won by submitting again to requirements that would bind them.
What Does Galatians 5:1 Mean?
Paul gathers everything he has argued into one charge: Christ has made you free, so hold your ground and do not let yourselves be tied back up. The word "therefore" reaches back over the whole letter -- the family of Abraham, the coming of faith, the Son sent at the appointed time. Because all of that is true, freedom is not a goal to chase but a gift already received and now to be guarded.
Two images frame the verse. "Stand fast" is the posture of someone holding a position against pressure, not drifting and not retreating. The "yoke of bondage" is the weight laid on a working animal -- a vivid picture of returning to a load Christ had already lifted. The danger Paul sees is not open rebellion but a quiet sliding back, accepting requirements as the price of acceptance until the freedom is lost by inches. He calls it being "entangled again," as if walking willingly back into a snare. The verse speaks to every believer tempted to re-secure with God a standing Christ has already secured. Freedom in Christ is not careless; it is something to be held firmly, with both feet planted.
In the Original Language
Eleutheria, "liberty," names freedom from bondage; stēkete, "stand fast," is a military-flavored call to hold one's ground; zygos, "yoke," pictures the heavy bar laid on a draft animal.
