What Does Galatians 5:24 Mean?
Paul states the decisive break. They that are Christ's — those who belong to him — have crucified the flesh. The image is the cross, and it is severe: the old self-ruled nature, with its affections and lusts, has been put to death with Christ. This is not a slow taming but a death sentence already passed.
Yet crucifixion is also slow and daily; the believer goes on saying no to what was nailed there. The flesh still stirs, but it no longer reigns, for it has been condemned at the cross. To belong to Christ is to have decisively renounced the old mastery of sinful desire and to live, by his Spirit, in the freedom that death secured.
