Context

Closing his teaching on the Spirit-led life, Paul presses the Galatians toward consistency: the Spirit who is the source of their life should also direct the way they actually live.

What Does Galatians 5:25 Mean?

Paul draws a simple line from what is already true to what should follow: since the Spirit is the source of our life, let our daily conduct keep step with that same Spirit. The "if" is not a doubt but an established fact -- we do live by the Spirit. On that footing he urges that the rest of life match its source. Inner reality should show itself in outward walking.

The two verbs are carefully chosen. "Live" points to the deep source of life; "walk" points to its everyday expression in conduct. The Greek behind "walk" here carries the sense of falling into line, keeping in step, like marching in order -- following the Spirit's lead one step at a time. Paul's concern throughout has been that the Galatians not let good beginnings drift into a life lived by other rules. So he closes the appeal with a call to consistency: do not claim the Spirit as your life and then walk by something else. This guards against an empty profession that never reaches the feet. The verse asks every reader a plain question -- if the Spirit gave you life, is your daily walking actually keeping pace with Him? Belief is meant to become practice.

In the Original Language

Zōmen, "we live," names the Spirit as life's source; stoichōmen, "let us walk," means to keep in step or fall into line, a different verb than in verse 16, stressing orderly, in-step conduct.

Application

Let your daily choices keep pace with the Spirit you claim as your life; a profession that never reaches your feet has not yet become real.
