God gives Abram and Sarai brand-new names — and makes them a promise so big they could hardly believe it.
Today's Story
Abram was now 99 years old, and he and Sarai still had no children. But God came to him with a promise as fresh as ever.
“I'm going to change your name,” God said. “You won't be Abram anymore. Your new name is Abraham — it means ‘father of many.’ Because that's what you'll be: the father of a huge family, as many as the stars!”
And God gave Sarai a new name too: Sarah, which means “princess.” “I will bless her,” God said, “and she will be the mother of nations.”
Abraham almost laughed. He was 99, and Sarah was 90! How could two such old people have a baby? It seemed impossible.
But God said, “Your son will be named Isaac.” (Isaac means “laughter.”) God was promising the impossible — and God always keeps His promises, no matter how impossible they seem.
New names. A new promise. And a God for whom nothing is ever too hard.
A Big Word

Talk About It
- God gave Abraham and Sarah new names to match His big promise. If God gave you a name that described who He's making you, what might it be?
- A baby for two people aged 99 and 90 seemed impossible! What's something that seems impossible to you?
- God promised the impossible and meant it. What helps you believe God can do hard things?
