Genesis 16 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

A woman named Hagar runs away into the desert, feeling alone and unwanted. But she's about to learn that God sees her — every tear.

Today's Story

Abram and Sarai still had no children, and they grew tired of waiting for God's promise. They tried to make it happen their own way, and it caused hurt in the family. A servant woman named Hagar ended up sad and badly treated.

Hagar felt so alone that she ran away into the hot, empty desert, all by herself. She sat down by a spring of water and cried.

But she wasn't as alone as she thought. The angel of the Lord found her there. “Hagar,” he said — he knew her name! — “where have you come from, and where are you going?”

God had a kind message for her: “Don't be afraid. God has heard you. You're going to have a son, and God will take care of you both.”

Hagar was amazed. God had seen HER — a runaway servant, crying alone in the desert. She gave God a special name: “You are the God who sees me.”

Hagar learned what we all need to know: no matter how alone or forgotten you feel, God sees you. He knows your name. He hasn't forgotten you for one second.
