Genesis 20 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

Abraham makes a mistake out of fear — but God steps in to protect His promise and keep everyone safe.

Today's Story

Abraham and Sarah traveled to a new land ruled by a king named Abimelech. Abraham was afraid that someone might hurt him to take Sarah. So, out of fear, he didn't tell the whole truth — he said Sarah was just his sister, not his wife.

Because of that, King Abimelech almost made a big mistake without even knowing it. But God stepped in! God came to Abimelech in a dream and warned him: “Sarah is Abraham's wife. Don't harm her.”

Abimelech listened right away. The very next morning, he gave Sarah safely back to Abraham. “Why didn't you tell me the truth?” he asked. Abraham admitted he had been afraid.

God protected Sarah and kept His promise safe — the promise that she and Abraham would have a son. Even when Abraham stumbled out of fear, God was watching over His plan.

We don't have to let fear scare us into lying. God is big enough to take care of us, and He keeps His promises even when we mess up.

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. Abraham was scared, so he didn't tell the whole truth. Has being scared ever made you want to hide the truth? What's a braver choice?
  2. God protected Sarah even when Abraham made a mistake. How does it feel to know God watches over you, even when grown-ups mess up?
  3. God warned the king in a dream, and the king listened right away. Why is it good to listen and fix a mistake quickly?
