Genesis 21 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

The baby God promised for so long is finally here — and God shows He cares for everyone in the family, even when things get hard.

Today's Story

At long last, the promise came true! Just as God said, Sarah had a baby boy. They named him Isaac, which means “laughter,” because Sarah was so full of joy. “God has made me laugh!” she said. After all those years of waiting, baby Isaac was finally here.

But as Isaac grew, there was trouble between Sarah and Hagar, and between Isaac and Hagar's son, Ishmael. It got so hard that Hagar and her boy ended up having to leave, out into the desert.

Soon their water ran out. Hagar set Ishmael down under a bush and sat a little ways off, crying, because she couldn't bear to watch her son suffer.

But God heard the boy crying. And God called to Hagar: “Don't be afraid. I have heard him. Get up, take your son by the hand — I am going to make him into a great nation too.”

Then God opened Hagar's eyes, and she saw a well of water right there! She filled her water-skin and gave her son a drink. And God was with Ishmael as he grew up, taking good care of him.

God kept His promise to Abraham and Sarah — AND He took loving care of Hagar and Ishmael. God's care is big enough for everyone.

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. Sarah named her baby “laughter” because she was so happy. What's something that fills you with happy laughter?
  2. Hagar was scared and crying, but God heard and helped. When you're scared or sad, what helps you remember God hears you?
  3. God cared for Isaac AND for Hagar and Ishmael. How does it feel to know God's care is big enough for everyone, including people who feel left out?
