The Chaldeans are dreadful and a law unto themselves — they answer to no authority but their own.

What Does Habakkuk 1:7 Mean?

The description of Babylon continues. They are terrible and dreadful, inspiring fear wherever they go. More chilling still, their judgment and dignity "proceed of themselves" — they recognize no standard above their own will. They decide what is right; they grant themselves their own honor.

Here is the portrait of unchecked human power: a nation that has made itself the measure of all things. This self-made dignity is exactly what will become its downfall, for the God who truly defines justice cannot be permanently ignored. The verse quietly warns against the pride that bows to no one. True dignity is received from God, not seized; and any greatness that answers only to itself stands already under judgment from the One it refuses to acknowledge.
