What Does Haggai 1:7 Mean?

The summons of verse 5 returns, now after the catalog of frustrations the people have endured. Repetition in Scripture signals emphasis; God is not content for the call to be heard once and forgotten. Having laid the evidence before them—the empty harvests, the unsatisfying meals—He presses the same gentle, searching command a second time.

Sometimes we need to hear a thing twice before it lands. The doubled ‘consider your ways’ is patient and persistent, the voice of a God willing to say again what must be heard. He does not give up on reaching the heart. For the reader, the repetition is itself an act of grace: the Lord keeps knocking, keeps inviting reflection, until His people are ready to turn and rebuild what they have let fall into ruin.
