On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD comes again through Haggai.

What Does Haggai 2:1 Mean?

About a month into the rebuilding, a new word arrives. The date is significant: the twenty-first of the seventh month fell during the Feast of Tabernacles, a time that recalled both Israel's wilderness journey and the dedication of Solomon's temple. As the people labored on a far humbler structure, God chose this resonant season to speak again.

The timing reveals God's pastoral care. He knows that a month of hard work, set against memories of former glory, can breed discouragement. So He sends a word precisely when the people most need it. The Lord does not speak only at the start of a task and then fall silent; He continues to attend to His workers, meeting them in the middle of the labor with fresh grace exactly when their strength and spirits begin to flag.
