What Does Haggai 2:20 Mean?
On the very day God promised blessing (v. 18–19), another word arrives—the fourth and final message of the book. This one turns from the people as a whole to Zerubbabel in particular, and from the present harvest to the distant horizon of God's purposes among the kingdoms of the earth. The repeated date binds the promise of blessing to the promise about to be made.
That two words come on a single day shows the fullness of what God wished to say. He is not finished encouraging His people; He adds to the promise of provision a promise about His sovereign rule over history. The Lord attends to both the daily bread of His people and the grand sweep of His kingdom, and He speaks to both on the same day—assuring the small community that their God is Lord of the harvest and Lord of the nations alike.
