Context

This verse begins the famous catalog of faith. Before listing the faithful, the author points to the foundational act of faith: understanding that God's word brought the world into being.

What Does Hebrews 11:3 Mean?

Hebrews 11:3 teaches that by faith we understand the worlds were brought into being by the word of God, so that what we see did not come from visible things. The verse opens the great chapter on faith by pointing to creation itself. Faith is the means by which we grasp the origin of all things; reason alone cannot reach back to that beginning, but faith receives it as God has revealed it.

The phrase "the worlds were framed by the word of God" affirms that God's spoken word brought the universe into order. The same God who speaks throughout Scripture is the one whose word shaped the cosmos. The second half of the verse makes a profound observation: "things which are seen were not made of things which do appear." The visible world we inhabit did not arise from other visible materials lying ready at hand; its origin lies beyond what the eye can observe, in the power and word of God. This sets the tone for the entire chapter. Faith deals with realities that cannot be seen -- it is, as verse one says, the evidence of things not seen. The very first act of faith named here is trusting God as the source of everything that exists, the unseen power behind all that appears.

In the Original Language

The Greek katartizō ("framed") means to put in order, prepare, or set in place, and rhēma ("word") refers to a spoken utterance.

Application

Let faith shape how you view the world, receiving God as the source of all that exists and trusting the unseen power behind everything you can see.
