Hebrews 4:12
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

The writer warns against unbelief and urges readers to take God's word seriously, because nothing is hidden from the One who speaks it.
What Does Hebrews 4:12 Mean?
In one sentence: God's word is not dead text but living and active -- it cuts deep enough to expose what is really inside us. "Quick" is older English for "living"; the word of God has life and force.
Like a surgeon's blade, Scripture penetrates to the hidden places -- "the thoughts and intents of the heart" -- showing us the truth about ourselves. We do not merely examine the word; the word examines us.
In the Original Language
The Greek "logos" is the word or message of God. "Zao" (quick) means living, alive. "Energes" (powerful) means active, effective, at work.
