What Does Hebrews 5:8 Mean?
Continuing from the prayer of verse 7, the writer makes a startling statement: though Jesus was the Son, He learned obedience through suffering. His sonship did not exempt Him from the hard school of trial; it led Him into it.
To learn obedience is not to move from disobedience to obedience, for He was without sin. It is to live obedience out under pressure, to know it from the inside by walking the costly path all the way. Because He did, His obedience is not theory but tested reality. The reader, facing their own suffering, finds a Lord who did not command from a distance but walked the road of trusting submission first, and walks it with us still.
