What Does Hebrews 7:14 Mean?
The writer names the tribe directly: our Lord sprang from Judah. This was well known, the royal tribe of David from which the Messiah was promised to come. But Judah was a kingly line, not a priestly one, and Moses gave it no role at the altar.
Here the two great offices meet again as they did in Melchizedek. The Lord descends from the line of kings, yet He serves as priest, and the law made no provision for such a thing through Judah. His priesthood therefore cannot rest on the law of Moses; it rests on the direct word and oath of God. In Christ the throne and the altar are joined in one Person, our King and our Priest.
