What Does Hebrews 7:13 Mean?
The writer points to a plain fact about the Messiah. The one of whom all these things are said belongs to a tribe other than Levi, a tribe that never furnished priests, none of whom ever stood to minister at the altar of God.
This observation is meant to be startling. Under the law, a man from outside Levi could not approach the altar as a priest at all. Yet here is the promised priest arising from just such a tribe. The fact forces the conclusion that His priesthood rests on a different and higher foundation than birth into Levi, an appointment that comes straight from God and finds its center in Christ alone.
