The threshing floor and winepress they trusted will not sustain them; the new wine they expected will run dry.

What Does Hosea 9:2 Mean?

The festival imagery of the first verse now turns against the people. The floor where grain is threshed and the press where grapes are crushed are the very places they looked to for plenty. Hosea announces that these will not feed them after all. The wine they counted on will fail before it fills the cup.

When a people credit their abundance to anything but God, the abundance itself begins to slip away. The gifts cannot save when the giver is forgotten; created things make poor gods, for they cannot keep their promises. The lesson is gentle and severe at once: every harvest is held in an open hand, and security built on grain and wine alone will not stand. Only the Lord who gives the increase can be trusted to sustain.
