What Does Hosea 9:3 Mean?
The land of promise was the LORD's own land, given as a home and a trust. Now Hosea warns that the people will not remain in it. Ephraim, the leading tribe of the north, will go back toward Egypt, the house of their old slavery, and into Assyria, where exiles must eat food that no faithful Israelite would touch. The gift of the land is being withdrawn.
To lose the land was to lose the place where worship, family, and daily bread were meant to honor God. Sin has a way of unmaking what grace has built, sending a people backward into the very bondage they were rescued from. Yet even in this warning there is mercy, for the One who once brought them out of Egypt is able to bring his people home again. Exile is never the last word for those he loves.
