The LORD extends Hezekiah's life by fifteen years, responding both to his prayer and his tears.

Context

The amendment is dramatic. Hezekiah, told he would die, is promised a new span of life.

What Does Isaiah 38:5 Mean?

The invocation of David is no accident. Hezekiah is the descendant of the great king whose own prayers moved the hand of God. The covenant with David is alive and active in his line. God has not forgotten His promises to that dynasty, and He remembers the prayer of this king who has sought Him with a whole heart.

Fifteen years is not forever, but it is life. It is time to see his son Manasseh grow into manhood, time to teach and guide, time to love and be loved. The tears Hezekiah wept were not wasted or ignored. God saw them, registered them, and answered with an abundance of time that exceeds what any other king might have asked for. This is grace meeting prayer not with the bare minimum but with generosity.

In the Original Language

shamah (שמע), 'I have heard' -- to hear and to understand, to take in and to act upon what one hears.

Application

God hears our cries and responds not with cold obligation but with grace that exceeds our asking. Our tears matter to Him.
