Isaiah 43:10

Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.

God calls ordinary people to be His witnesses, so that they themselves come to know how truly He is the only God.

Context

Part of a courtroom scene in Isaiah where God summons the nations and their idols to testify. The idols can say nothing and predict nothing. Against that silence, God calls His own people to the witness stand: 'Ye are my witnesses.'

What Does Isaiah 43:10 Mean?

God gives His people a role that is almost startling: 'Ye are my witnesses.' In a trial, a witness simply tells what they have seen and known. God has acted in their history, kept His promises, carried them, and now He asks them to testify to it. And there is a gift hidden in the calling. The purpose is 'that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he.' In bearing witness to God, they come to know Him better themselves. He stands alone, with no god made before Him and none to come after, the one true and living God.

This calling did not end. The risen Jesus told His friends, 'ye shall be witnesses unto me' (Acts 1:8), placing the very same role on them. To witness to Christ is to know Him more deeply, because the truth grows clearer as we speak it and live it. The God who alone is God has made Himself known supremely in His Son, and He still invites us to know, believe, and understand.

In the Original Language

ed (עֵד), 'witness' -- one who testifies to what they have personally seen and known to be true.

Application

There is a quiet promise here for anyone unsure they know God well enough. We come to know Him more surely precisely as we witness to what He has done, telling the truth of His faithfulness in our own lives. Knowing, believing, and understanding grow together as we testify to Christ.
