Context

Following the call to release the past, Isaiah 43:19 announces God's new work of deliverance, using images of a path and rivers in barren places.

What Does Isaiah 43:19 Mean?

Isaiah 43:19 is God's declaration that He is doing a new thing, opening a way where none existed and bringing life to barren places. The "Behold" commands attention to something fresh and present: "now it shall spring forth." The new work is not a distant hope but something already beginning to break through, like a seed pushing up through soil.

Two images capture the wonder of it. God will "make a way in the wilderness" -- a path through trackless, impassable terrain where travelers would otherwise be lost. And He will bring "rivers in the desert" -- water and life in the very place where survival seems impossible. These are pictures of God doing what cannot be done by human means: creating possibility out of barrenness, refreshment out of dryness. The verse follows the call to stop clinging to the past, and now shows why -- because what God is about to do will be new and astonishing. He asks, "shall ye not know it?" -- inviting His people to perceive His work as it unfolds. For anyone in a wilderness season, this verse is a promise that God specializes in making ways where there are none and bringing streams to the desert places of life. The God who acted in the past is not finished; He is still making the impossible possible.

In the Original Language

"New thing" is chadashah. "Spring forth" is tzamach, to sprout or grow. "Way" is derech, a road; "wilderness" is midbar, uninhabited land.

Application

In your wilderness seasons, watch for the new thing God is doing; He delights in making a way where there is none and bringing rivers to the desert.
