God affirms that the servant's calling, to restore the people of Jacob, remains valid even if complete success seems impossible; glory and strength come from God's covenant perspective.

Context

The Lord reiterates the servant's formation and purpose, and promises that even in apparent failure to gather all Israel, the servant will be honored by God.

What Does Isaiah 49:5 Mean?

And now, saith the LORD: a turn toward present reassurance, grounded in the eternal fact of formation. From the womb God has shaped this servant for the work of restoration, of bringing Jacob back into covenant relationship. But notice the tension: Though Israel be not gathered. The Lord does not promise that all Israel will respond. Restoration may be incomplete, the harvest less than hoped. Yet shall I be glorious: the servant's worth does not depend on results. To be glorified in the eyes of the Lord is a different glory altogether. It is not the applause of crowds but the delight of heaven, not the vindication of earthly victory but the honor of fidelity. And my God shall be my strength: not confidence in human resources or strategic advantage, but the ongoing power of the covenant God to sustain and uphold.

This is deeply consoling for all whose work is incomplete, all who labor in minority, all who serve without seeing the full fruit. The call to restoration in our own time is similar: to invite people toward reconciliation with God, even knowing that many will refuse. Our strength is not in numbers won or victories achieved but in the unflinching presence of God with us. We are glorious not by the world's count but by heaven's delight. This is enough. It is everything.

Application

Your value is not measured by success in your calling but by faithfulness to it. God's delight in you sustains you when the harvest is smaller than hoped.
