Isaiah 49:6 Meaning and Explanation

It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob: not that restoring the covenant people is unimportant, but that there is more. Always more. God's purposes are not confined to one nation, even the chosen one. The view expands from the particular to the universal. I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles. The servant becomes the means of revelation to those who were not at Sinai, who did not have the Law, who lived in the darkness of distance from the God of Abraham. My salvation unto the end of the earth: the scope is planetary, cosmic. No corner of the world is outside God's intention to bring light, reconciliation, hope. This is the scandal and the beauty of grace: it cannot be contained. It pours out beyond every boundary we draw.

We live on this side of that expansion. The gospel has reached us, distant peoples who would never have expected it. We have become recipients of a light sent to the ends of the earth. And we are invited into the same vocation: to be bearers of that light in our own time, to our own distant neighbors. This verse expands the horizon of what mission means. It is not conquest or control but the radiant sharing of what we have received, the invitation to come out of darkness and see the face of the God who loves all nations.
