This verse concludes Isaiah 54, summarizing God's promises of protection and vindication for His people as their secure inheritance.
What Does Isaiah 54:17 Mean?
Isaiah 54:17 assures God's servants that no weapon or accusation formed against them will ultimately succeed. The promise addresses two kinds of attack: physical weapons that are "formed against thee" and verbal assaults, "every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment." Neither will prevail. The weapons will not prosper, and the accusing tongues will be answered and overcome. This is not a guarantee against all hardship, but an assurance about the final outcome for those who belong to God.
The verse grounds this protection in a crucial truth: "their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD." The standing of God's servants does not rest on their own merit but is granted by God Himself. Because their righteousness comes from Him, their security comes from Him too. This is called "the heritage of the servants of the LORD" -- an inheritance, something belonging to them by virtue of their relationship with God. Coming at the close of a chapter rich with covenant comfort, the verse seals the promise of God's protective faithfulness. For the believer facing opposition or slander, it offers steady confidence: the verdict that matters belongs to God, and He has already declared His servants His own.
In the Original Language
The Hebrew tsalach means to prosper or succeed, here denied to the enemy's weapons; nachalah means heritage or inheritance, what belongs to God's servants by right.
