James closes his first chapter by defining authentic devotion, contrasting empty religious appearance with active compassion and personal purity.
What Does James 1:27 Mean?
James defines true religion not by ritual or words but by two concrete marks: caring for the vulnerable and keeping oneself pure. He uses the language of the temple -- "pure" and "undefiled" -- but redirects it from ceremonial cleanness to compassion and integrity. This is worship that God actually receives.
The first mark is to "visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction." In the ancient world, orphans and widows were the most defenseless members of society, often without protection or provision. To "visit" means far more than a social call; it means to look after, to care for their needs. God measures the genuineness of devotion by how his people treat those who can give nothing in return. The second mark is to "keep himself unspotted from the world" -- to refuse the corruption and selfishness that mark a life turned away from God. Together these two define real godliness: active mercy toward others and personal holiness before God. James thus brings his opening chapter to a head. Faith that hears the word becomes faith that does it, and what it does is love the helpless and live clean.
In the Original Language
The word "pure" is katharos, clean or unmixed; "undefiled" renders amiantos, unstained; "visit" is episkeptomai, to look after or care for, the same root behind the word for overseer.
