What Does James 2:23 Mean?
James cites the Scripture: Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness. The word spoken of Abraham's faith was fulfilled, brought to its full meaning, in the obedience on Moriah. His belief, declared righteous long before, proved itself living when it was tested.
And he was called the Friend of God, a title of intimate trust and faithfulness. The man who believed and obeyed walked in friendship with God. James shows that the righteousness credited to Abraham's faith and the works that displayed that faith belong to one whole life. The reader is drawn toward the same friendship, the closeness with God that comes to those whose faith is real enough to live, as Abraham's was, and as Christ makes possible.
