What Does James 3:15 Mean?
James names the source of the envious, contentious spirit. This so-called wisdom does not come down from above; it is earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. It belongs to this world, to the unspiritual self, and ultimately to the powers of darkness.
By tracing it downward, James contrasts it sharply with every good gift that comes down from above from the Father of lights. The wisdom that produces jealousy and strife has a wholly different origin and a wholly different character. It only masquerades as wisdom. The reader is given a clear test of where his guiding wisdom comes from, by the fruit it bears. A wisdom that divides and embitters cannot be the wisdom God gives, which is about to be described as something entirely other.
