What Does Philippians 3:19 Mean?
Paul describes these enemies of the cross. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, their glory is actually their shame, and their minds are fixed on earthly things.
It is a portrait of a life turned downward, ruled by appetite and bent only on what is earthly. They worship their own desires, take pride in what ought to shame them, and never lift their gaze above this world. The result is ruin. Paul draws this dark picture not to gloat but as a sober warning, the very opposite of the heavenward life he commends. A life that lives for the belly and for earthly things ends in loss; a life that presses toward Christ ends in glory. The contrast he is about to make could not be sharper, for in the next verse he lifts the believer's eyes to heaven.
