Job 11:9 Meaning and Explanation

Continuing his portrait of God's boundless wisdom, Zophar stretches the comparison along the horizon. Its measure is longer than the earth and broader than the sea. Having reached up to heaven and down to the grave, he now sweeps across the whole expanse of the world, as if to say that no dimension of creation can contain the greatness of God.

Length, breadth, height, and depth all fail to fence in what God knows and is. Centuries later the same fourfold language would be lifted up to describe the love of Christ, which surpasses knowledge in just these directions. The immensity that Zophar wields to silence Job is, in fuller light, the very immensity of a love that reaches us wherever we are. The God who cannot be measured chooses to be known, and His greatness is finally good news.
