What Does Job 15:25 Mean?
Eliphaz now names the root cause of the doom he has described. The wicked man, he says, stretches out his hand against God and braces himself against the Almighty, raising a defiant fist toward heaven as if he could prevail against his Maker. It is the very picture of proud rebellion.
To stretch out the hand against God is folly, for no creature can overpower the Almighty; such defiance can only recoil upon the rebel. The principle is sound, that hardened resistance to God ends in ruin. Yet Eliphaz wrongly fits Job to this mold, mistaking honest lament for clenched-fist rebellion. The verse calls every reader to examine whether we are bracing ourselves against God or yielding to him, while warning us not to read defiance into the cries of the broken.
