Job 20:24 Meaning and Explanation

Zophar turns to images of war. The man flees from the iron weapon only to be struck through by the bow of bronze. He dodges one danger and runs straight into another. Every avenue of escape closes; judgment finds him no matter which way he turns.

The picture captures the futility of fleeing a reckoning that God has appointed. As Scripture elsewhere says, it is as if a man fled from a lion and met a bear. No human strength or cunning can finally outrun divine justice. The only true refuge is not flight but repentance — to stop running and turn toward the God who is far more ready to forgive than to condemn.
