What Does Job 38:16 Mean?
God presses on with the sea's mysteries. Has Job journeyed to the springs from which the sea is fed, or walked the floor of the deep in search of its secrets? These are places no human foot had touched, hidden far beyond reach.
The questions are meant to humble, but also to enlarge Job's sense of God. There are whole regions of the creation, vast and unseen, that God knows perfectly and Job does not know at all. If God's knowledge runs so far beyond ours in the matter of the sea, how much more in the matter of our suffering? We walk by trust where we cannot walk by sight.
