God asks where light and darkness make their home, as if each had a dwelling place Job might visit.

What Does Job 38:19 Mean?

God speaks of light and darkness as if each lived in its own place, with a road leading home. Where does light dwell? Where is the abode of darkness? Job cannot point the way to either; their origins lie wholly with God.

Light and darkness, which order all our days, are not Job's to command or even to locate. They come and go at God's appointing. The Lord who knows the dwelling of the light is the source of all true light, and in him is no darkness at all. To know where light dwells is, finally, to know him, the Father of lights from whom every good gift descends.
