What Does Job 40:1 Mean?
This brief line marks a hinge in the great speech that began in chapter 38. Out of the whirlwind God has paraded the wonders of sea and sky, beast and star, before Job. Now the survey pauses, and the Lord turns from the world to the man, gathering all those questions into one pointed reply.
After chapters of Job's longing to plead his case before God, the longing is granted: God speaks, and speaks to Job by name. The mere fact that the Almighty answers a suffering man is itself a mercy. He does not ignore Job's cries; He meets them. The same God who questions us also draws near to us, and to be addressed by Him is the beginning of being healed by Him.
