What Does Job 6:21 Mean?
Job draws the comparison home. Just as the dry brook proved worthless, so his friends have become nothing in his hour of need. Seeing his ruin, they are frightened and draw back rather than draw near.
Fear of another's suffering can make us recoil instead of reach out, as if calamity were contagious. Job names this temptation honestly. The gospel calls us the opposite way, toward the afflicted rather than away, after the pattern of the One who drew near to the leper, the outcast, and the grieving without fear.
