What Does John 1:22 Mean?

Having run out of categories, the questioners hand John an open page: What sayest thou of thyself? They are emissaries who must give an answer to them that sent us, and three denials do not make a report. For a moment the famous preacher is given the floor to define himself however he pleases.

Notice what John has been handed: a formal invitation to self-promotion. Few temptations are subtler than the chance to explain yourself to important people. His answer in the next verse will contain none of his own titles, only Scripture. When asked who you are, it is no small grace to answer with what God has said.
