What Does John 1:25 Mean?
The interrogation sharpens from identity to authority. Ceremonial washings were known in Israel, but John was baptizing Israelites themselves, as though the covenant people needed to begin again at the Jordan. If he holds none of the great offices, the Pharisees reason, he has no standing to enact such a sign.
Their logic assumes God works only through the channels they expect. But heaven was doing a new thing, and the warrant behind John's baptism was the God who sent him, as he will say plainly in verse 33.
