What Does John 1:45 Mean?
The chain continues: found by Jesus, Philip immediately finds Nathanael. His witness is a Bible reader's witness, him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write. Every scroll, Philip claims, was pointing at the man he met today, and he names him plainly by town and family: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
Philip's instinct is exactly right even where his information is incomplete; there is more to Jesus' origin than Nazareth and Joseph, as this chapter has already shown us. But God honors witness that is true as far as it goes. We testify of what we have found, and Christ himself supplies what we do not yet know.
