In the colonnade the leaders close around him — the wording suggests a surrounding ring — and put the question that has simmered for chapters: "If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly." Their phrase "make us to doubt" is literally "hold our soul in suspense." At a feast recalling the Maccabees' deliverance, hopes of a delivering Messiah ran high and dangerous.
The demand sounds sincere, but the next verse exposes it: he has told them, in word and work, and they have not believed. Some suspense is manufactured by unwillingness, not by lack of evidence.
