What Does John 12:7 Mean?
Jesus silences the criticism and gives Mary's act its true name. He alone at that table knows how near his death is. Bodies were anointed with fragrant oils for burial, and he receives her gift as that anointing given early, while he can still be loved in person.
Jesus protects those who love him from the scorn of onlookers, and he interprets our offerings better than we do. Mary's gift meant more than even she may have known. So it often is: love poured out in faith is taken up into purposes larger than the giver can see.
