John 13:12 Meaning and Explanation

The action is complete. Jesus has washed the feet of all the disciples, one by one. He has toweled them dry. He has taken up his garments and resumed his place at the table. Now he pauses and asks a question that is not really a question: 'Know ye what I have done to you?' It is an invitation to reflection, to meaning-making. He is not asking for literal knowledge (of course they know he washed their feet), but for understanding of the theological and spiritual significance. What is the meaning of this act? What is Jesus trying to teach through it?

By asking rather than declaring, Jesus invites the disciples into active understanding. He does not simply proclaim a rule; he creates a moment for them to think and receive.
