What Does John 13:21 Mean?
The hints of verses 10 and 18 now become open testimony. John lets us see the cost: Jesus is "troubled in spirit," the same word used at the grave of Lazarus (John 11:33) and at the approach of his hour (John 12:27). Then, with the solemn double amen, he says it aloud: one of you.
Foreknowledge does not numb him. The treachery of a friend strikes Jesus as a man feels it, and he names it without bitterness and without naming the man. Here is a high priest who can be touched with the feeling of our infirmities (Hebrews 4:15), one who carried a shaken heart into perfect obedience and who understands every disciple who must do the same.
