What Does John 13:27 Mean?
Only here does this Gospel name Satan, and his entering follows the refusal of a last kindness. What began as a suggestion dropped into the heart (verse 2) has become occupation of a man whose choice has hardened. Jesus, knowing all of it, dismisses him: "That thou doest, do quickly."
The command does not authorize the sin; it shows who holds the clock. Jesus is not cornered by betrayal, for he lays down his life of himself (John 10:18), and even the schemes of darkness must keep his appointed hour. The verse carries a solemn mercy for every reader: refused grace does not leave a heart neutral. A door held shut against the Lord can open, in time, to another master.
