Context
Jesus's statement of his divine commission and identity just before the foot-washing, setting the theological ground for the lesson that follows.
What Does John 13:3 Mean?
John pauses the narrative to show us the foundation of what is about to happen. Jesus knows three things: that all things are given into his hands, that he came from God, and that he goes to God. This is not guesswork or fear. He operates from absolute security. His power is not in doubt; his identity is not in question. The Creator of all things is about to wash the feet of his servants.
This knowledge transforms the act. When we serve from a place of scarcity, we hoard our dignity and protect our image. But Jesus, lacking nothing, has nothing to lose. His security frees him to love without calculation. We too are invited to rest in the Father's love and provision, so that our acts of service flow not from obligation or image management, but from the overflow of being known, claimed, and held by God.
Application
When we grasp that we belong to God and are secure in his hands, we find freedom to serve others without needing to impress or protect ourselves. Our worth is already settled.
