Read Full Chapter →Peter protests that he is ready to die for Jesus, showing confident love but also revealing his inability to see his own weakness.
Context
Peter's declaration immediately follows Jesus's gentle correction. This is the Last Supper, hours before the arrest and the trial that will test every word Peter has spoken.
In the Original Language
psyche (Greek), 'life' or 'soul' -- the word carries the sense of the whole self, the vital essence one lays down in death
Application
When we find ourselves confident in our own strength or certain of our loyalty, we do well to remember Peter's honesty about his readiness and his subsequent failure. True faithfulness grows through our weakness, not our confidence, and is sustained by Christ's continual restoration, not by our own resolve.
