What Does John 16:14 Mean?
The Spirit is utterly Christocentric. He will not distract from Jesus, elevate himself, or point the world to a new revelation separate from Jesus. Instead, 'he shall receive of mine' -- the Spirit takes the riches of Christ, the glory that belongs to Jesus, the victory, the redemption, the mercy, the power -- and makes them known. He will 'shew it unto you': reveal, display, make visible and intelligible. The disciples will see, understand, and know the magnitude of what Jesus has done. After the resurrection, when they saw Jesus alive, it was the beginning. But as the Spirit unpacked the meaning of his death, the implications of his rising, the promise of his coming again, the disciples were led into ever-deeper apprehension of Christ's glory.
This is a guard against every false spirit, every false gospel, every false authority that tries to steal the show from Jesus. The true Spirit of God never diminishes Jesus, never whispers that there is another way, another truth, another revelation that supersedes or supplements the Gospel. He always, always turns our eyes to Jesus.
Application
When evaluating any teaching, any movement, any spiritual claim, ask: does it glorify Jesus? Does it reveal his worth, his redemption, his character more clearly? If not, it is not of the Spirit of truth. Seek teachers and traditions that point you always back to the glory of Jesus.
