What Does John 18:33 Mean?
Pilate withdraws from the shouting outside to question the prisoner alone. The charge has evidently been framed for Roman ears as treason — a rival king — so the governor puts it to him plainly: Art thou the King of the Jews? You — bound, friendless, delivered by your own — a king?
The question governs the rest of the Gospel: it will be fastened over the cross in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin (John 19:19-20). Pilate asks it in irony and speaks truer than he knows. And the question cannot be left with Pilate; every reader inherits it. Whether Jesus is King settles more than his identity — it settles whose we are and whom we serve.
