What Does John 19:17 Mean?
The condemned carried the instrument of their own death through the streets to the execution ground. Jesus goes forth bearing his cross, as Isaac once carried the wood for his own sacrifice up another hill (Genesis 22:6) — but this time there is no ram in the thicket; the Lamb himself has come (Genesis 22:8; John 1:29).
He suffered "without the gate" (Hebrews 13:12), outside the holy city, in the place of the outcast. And the road he walks is the very shape of discipleship he had named: take up the cross and follow (Luke 9:23). He walks it first, and he walks it alone, so that no one who follows him afterward will ever walk it unaccompanied.
