What Does John 2:13 Mean?
Passover drew pilgrims to Jerusalem every spring to remember the night God delivered Israel from Egypt, when the blood of a lamb marked the doors of the redeemed (Exod. 12). One always went up to the holy city, set high in the Judean hills. This is the first of several Passovers John will mark in his Gospel.
It is no accident that Jesus' public work in Jerusalem opens at Passover. John the Baptist has already named him the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world (John 1:29), and every Passover he keeps points toward the one at which he himself will be offered. He goes up to the feast he was born to fulfill.
